What is kaomoji?

Kaomoji (顔文字, literally "face characters") are the Japanese style of emoticon: faces built entirely from typed characters. A Western emoticon like :-) lies sideways and speaks through its mouth; a kaomoji like (^_^) stands upright and speaks through its eyes. Because kaomoji draw on the whole of Unicode — katakana, CJK symbols, IPA letters, Braille patterns and more — they can express far more than a handful of ASCII punctuation ever could, and they remain ordinary text that pastes into any app.

A short history

The first documented kaomoji appeared in 1986 on ASCII NET, a Japanese online service, when Yasushi Wakabayashi used (^_^) to mark jokes. Emoji followed only in 1999, when Shigetaka Kurita designed the first 176 emoji for NTT DoCoMo — making kaomoji the elder of the two by thirteen years. Since then kaomoji have evolved from chat shorthand into a design language of their own: the aesthetic sparkle sets and dividers in this gallery (⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡ and friends) come from that newer decorative tradition.

How to use this gallery

Click any face once and it is on your clipboard — paste it into Discord, Instagram or TikTok bios, X/Twitter posts, messages or documents. Use the category chips to jump to a mood, or type in the search box to filter across everything at once: "cat" finds the cats, "cry" finds the tears, "divider" finds the aesthetic borders. Many people arrive here from searches like "kaomoji copy paste" or "kaomoji copy and paste" — whichever spelling brought you, the workflow is the same: click, paste, done. Everything is free and needs no account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kaomoji?

Kaomoji (顔文字, "face characters") are Japanese-style emoticons built entirely from text characters — katakana, CJK symbols and punctuation. Unlike sideways Western emoticons such as :-), kaomoji read upright, and most of the expression is carried by the eyes.

Who invented kaomoji?

The first documented kaomoji was posted in 1986 on ASCII NET, a Japanese online service, by Yasushi Wakabayashi, who used (^_^) to mark jokes. Emoji arrived thirteen years later, in 1999, from Shigetaka Kurita at NTT DoCoMo — so kaomoji are the older art form.

What is the difference between kaomoji and emoji?

Kaomoji are plain text assembled from Unicode characters; emoji are standardized picture glyphs drawn by your device's OS. Because kaomoji are text, they work anywhere text works — usernames, bios, chat, documents — and no app needs to add support for them.

How do I type kaomoji without copying?

On a Japanese keyboard (IME), type かおもじ and press convert — the IME suggests kaomoji. Phone Japanese keyboards have a dedicated kaomoji key. On any other keyboard, copying from this page is the fast route: one click on any face puts it on your clipboard.

Where do kaomoji work?

Anywhere that accepts Unicode text: Discord, Instagram and TikTok bios, X/Twitter posts, messages, documents and most games. A rare decorative character may fall back to a substitute font on very old devices, but it stays the same character.

Are these kaomoji free to use?

Yes. Kaomoji are community-made character combinations that have circulated online for decades — copy anything here and use it wherever you like, no credit needed.
